Perfusion systems

Isolated organs such as heart, liver, kidney and mesenteric bed can be perfused using emka TECHNOLOGIES perfusion systems.

While isolated heart, liver and kidney are perfused using the same modular apparatus, mesenteric beds benefit of a specific perfusion system.





Constant pressure or constant flow


Mesenteric beds perfusion

Mesenteric beds perfusion allows the study the effect of vasoactive substances and electrical stimulation on the mesenteric beds of small animals.

Our system is designed for the perfusion of up to four independent isolated mesenteric beds of small animals.

Pressure acquired in iox2 software is measured just upstream of the cannula, reflecting changes in vascular tone.

The standard setup consists of:

  • A perfusion system made of four tissue baths equipped with a stainless steel grid
  • 3 peristaltic pumps providing mesenteric perfusion, bath perfusion and baths overflow (to aspirate excess of liquid going out of the bath due to mesenteric perfu­sion and bath perfusion)
  • A heating system, to keep the temperature of the perfusate constant
  • A carbogen supply
  • A data acquisition system (blood pressure transducer, usbAMP amplifier and iox2 software)
  • A stimulator, if electrical stimulation is required

Each organ lies on a stainless steel grid and bathes in a buffer solution.

The organ is perfused at a constant flow rate (from 5 to 20 ml/min) via its artery. Heated water is circulated continually through the space behind the bath walls to maintain the buffer solution at the right temperature. Carbogen is released directly into the buffer solution.

Several small cannulas are available to suit different artery sizes. Buffer flow rate is 5 to 10 times greater (maximum is 150ml/min.) than perfusion flow in order for perfusion to fully infuse bath liquid.

Organ bed heights, bath volume and carbogen supply are adjustable.

Isolated liver & kidney perfusion

Liver and kidney can be perfused using the emka TECHNOLOGIES’s isolatedHEART system, with a specific support tray.

The organ, lying on the tray, is perfused at a constant flow or a constant pressure rate, through the artery. Veina is also canulated to collect perfused liquids or adjust post-charge pressure.

Several canula sizes are available to fit perfectly the vessel.
